Secondary Schools

Here at Shannon River Adventure we have been working with schools for many years and we are committed to delivering programs and activities to give your students a unique and funfilled experience. We offer programs ranging from fun multi-activity day trips, educational programs, to our unique island camping journey. However, we must adapt to these strange Covid-19 times and have outlined below how we would like to offer our programs while reassuring schools and parents of our commitment to delivering these safely.

These are very uncertain times for schools and programme coordinators and it is difficult to know how you, and facilities such as us, can enable students to avail of activities and trips during their TY year.  With this in mind, we have put together some options and suggestions that may suit some schools, particularly local schools.

Since we are an outdoor venue with plenty of fresh air about, one of the biggest challenges for schools will be transporting children safely to an activity venue.  We have already had several TY coordinators contact us to discuss options open to us all and, through some of those discussions, we have come up with some options that might interest you, including the suggestion that space may be saved on buses by having parents/guardians drop off and collect their children.

In addition, we have been operating this season since June 29th under the Covid-19 Safety Charter and, with the extra hygiene adaptations we have had in place, have a had a busy season. We have been running kids and teens adventure camps througout and have been booked out solidly. Our teen camps included an overnight camping trip to the island which is run similarly to our secondary school team building overnight package (see belwo). This worked very successfully with some adaptations to sleeping arrangements.

There will also be reluctance in schools to have an overnight option at all this year so, to that end, we have also introduced a longer day trip.  See below for the options outlined.

During the Multi-activity/Camping and Gaisce trips no phones are allowed which encourages team bonding without distraction.

Thanks once again to all at Shannon River Adventure. The instructors were excellent, even better this year than previous years – which is impressive. The students really enjoyed themselves as did Dan and I. Look forward to returning again next year.

6th Years

"I have used Shannon River Adventure for senior camping trips with my school for the last 3 years. It is an unbeatable experience for both teachers and students. Disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with each other face to face. This trip is well-being on a very real level. Engaging with each other in team building activities, building and strengthening relationships - this trip should be on the curriculum of every post primary school".

Paula Rave - Teacher

This morning myself and a group of friends sadly left Shannon River Adventure. It was an amazing experience and well worth the money, creating a great environment for us to grow and connect as a group. Thank you for being so welcoming, we hope to be back.

Molly Measey - student

Well recommended, unreal time, loved every second of it.

TY Multi-Activity and Island Camping Trip - (St. Joseph’s College, Lucan, Co. Dublin - April 2018)

“A huge thank you to Tommy, Lara, Eamon and all the Spanish helpers for a very enjoyable couple of days in Rooskey. We were all delighted to be returning to Rooskey over the Easter holidays. Overall, the trip is very well organised from being collected at Dromod train station to the collection of mobiles, the variety of activities, the overnight on the island. Students were kept busy throughout and enjoyed the time in the between to relax and have a cuppa!  The day is well structured with activities changing when needed. Students enjoyed all the games that took place e.g. blind climbing, tightrope walking etc.  The instructions given by Eamon and the other guides were well communicated and clear. The safety and welfare of students was paramount at all times e,g, not staying out too long in cold water. The guides were friendly and very helpful at all times. Students were encouraged to work in groups and it brought all together.  We appreciate greatly the opportunity to come to Rooskey and look forward to hopefully bringing groups down here again and maybe bringing the mobile climbing wall to Lucan next year. A huge thanks again”.

Silver Gaisce Trip - Our Lady’s Templemore - April 2018

“We did 3 days, 2 nights here and, although we found it challenging at times, we thoroughly enjoyed the camping experience on the island. Sitting around the campfire, singing and playing games. I would genuinely recommend this experience”.

“Tommy was great. He gave us what we want and always with a smile. The students loved the real experience of the outdoor life, with campfire songs, games, food. They catered for all needs. We will be back!”

“Excellent group experience. Perfect for the TY students. It takes them outside their comfort zone and challenges them to try new experiences. No phones in camp is a great idea”.

Bronze Gaisce Trip - Dominican College’ Galway - April 2017

"Tommy, Lara and crew were so welcoming and professional. There was a really positive vibe around the centre and on the walks. The walks and trip on the Shannon provided beautiful scenery and the natural beauty of the island was breath taking. Camping on Rabbit Island is a must do experience for anyone and definite highlight of our stay. The walks were well organised and it was obvious great thought, care and research was put into picking out the most scenic routes. We would highly recommend the centre to any school and can’t wait to go back!”

TY Multi-Activity and Island Camping Trip - Templeoque College, Dublin - May 2017

“Booked in again for our TYs at Shannon River Adventure. We have large TY numbers – 100+ - and booking and arrangements were handled really well. Good activities during the day and the “back to nature” approach for the island camping is great. Tommy and his team know exactly what they’re doing, especially when it comes to putting teachers’ minds at rest regarding safety and good supervision”.

Bronze Gaisce Trip - CBS, Roscommon - September  2017

“Thank you very much for a very well organised, really enjoyable few days on our Gaisce trip for our boys! We did the cycling/camping journey and the boys loved it from start to finish. The boys cycled from Roscommon and then took part in land and water activities before canoeing to the island for great food, games and camp fire fun. Thanks again”
