5 fun things to do when it’s raining

We’ve all heard – sure Ireland would be a great place if you could only put a roof on it! Ok, so we do get our fair share of rain but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun! Here are 5 fun things you can do locally when it’s raining:

1. Not the most obvious one – swimming in the rain is very exhilarating. The water actually feels warmer than you’d think because your body has been cooled down from the rain – seriously, it’s worth trying but do bring a nice big towel for after.
2. Fishing – the falling rain on water ‘stirs’ things up so that fish move nearer to the surface. Also, during and just after the rain, flies hang out around the surface of the water which attracts the fish. So, as long as you’re kitted out in waterproof gear, this can be a very satisfying activity in rainy weather.
3. For those who’d prefer to stay completely dry, Karting is a fun activity for all the family. There’s great indoor Go Karting  in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.
4. For those looking for a bit of culture, there are several options for historical interest including: Strokestown Park House and Gardens, Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, and Arigna Mining Experience.
5. Or why not brush up on your culinary skills over 2-3 hrs at Cloughan Farm And Cookery School.

If all else fails, you could take what my mother used to call a ‘McFadden’ day – under the duvet with a good film or book!
